Biography:

Jack D. Welsh, a native of Grand Island, Nebraska, is also an alumnus of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the University of Nebraska College of Medicine- Omaha. He has served as Professor of Medicine at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine as well as an attending physician at hospitals and medical centers in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Welsh maintained an interest in the Civil War that increased as he continued to find mention of wounds and illnesses that debilitated or caused the death of military officers. His investigation into the medical histories of both Union and Confederate officers assists in delineating information about their lives and the practice of medicine at the time.

Scope and Content:

The Welsh collection consists of photocopies of the medical and pension records of Union generals who served in the U.S. Civil War. Some records include death certificates. The records detail the activities of officers during the war and items that provide justification for pensions. Welsh obtained the photocopies from the National Archives and used the materials as research for his book Medical Histories of Union Generals. Approximately 583 records are included in the collection. The materials are arranged in alphabetical order and each file contains all the records Welsh acquired for the individual officer. Also included in the collection are letters Welsh wrote to various repositories asking for materials relating to his research. Enclosed in the responses Welsh received are photocopied materials. The collection contains notes Welsh wrote on microfilm materials, guides to microfilm in the National Archives, and photocopies of articles and newspaper clippings on individuals and topics related to Welsh's research.

The veteran records include photocopies of materials Welsh gathered from the National Archives relating to individual Union generals.

Series 2: Correspondence Box 18

The correspondence is comprised of letters written by Welsh to various repositories inquiring about materials they may have relating to his research on Union Generals and replies that Welsh received, along with the materials photocopied from the repositories' collections.

 Series 3: Research Materials Box 18

The research materials consist of Welsh's microfilm guides and notes on materials he received from the National Archives, as well as miscellaneous articles relating to individuals and events associated with his research.
