Background Note:

In 1970, Sally Garoutte and Joyce Gross began studying the history of quilts and quilt making. They formed the Mill Valley Quilt Authority and built a network of individuals that now comprises the American Quilt Study Group (AQSG). In 1979, Garoutte and Gross proposed a gathering of quilters, quilt scholars, and collectors, among others, to discuss quilt history, biographies of quilt makers, documenting quilts, and the promotion of quilts as an art form. The first meeting of AQSG occurred in Mill Valley in November 1980. Since that time, AQSG has grown to include more than a thousand members from all over the United States and the world. AQSG publishes a peer-reviewed journal once a year titled Uncoverings, which includes articles addressing all aspect of the quilt studies. News about the activities of AQSG, its officers, and its members is distributed through the "Blanket Statements" newsletter. Each year the AQSG membership meets at a conference. Papers published in Uncoverings are presented at this conference, along with other sessions and activities. AQSG is governed by elected officers and day-to-day activities are supervised by an executive director.

Scope and Content

The AQSG Quilt Research Files include administrative correspondence, the "Blanket Statement" newsletters, and selected documents created through administrative and general membership activities. These were created by AQSG but do not constitute their official records. The subject and research files document a wide variety of topics related to quilt studies and textiles. The files were initially developed through the efforts of Sally Garoutte, Joyce Gross, and through the activities and administration of AQSG. The subject files were developed through the efforts of Sally Garoutte and Joyce Gross, officers, and AQSG members. Generally, the subject files include original published articles, photocopies, newsletters, press releases, newspaper articles, exhibit posters, photographs, slides, and swatch books. The AQSG records assist in the study of quilts, quilt making, and quilters.

Series Description: Series 1: AQSG Records Box 1-2

This series includes administrative records and documents relating to the activities of AGSG, including general correspondence, membership rosters, the AQSG newsletter "Blanket Statements" from 1984 until 2002, along with information on the first AQSG seminar. There is a periodical inventory that documents those received by the group along with documents on publicizing AQSG in quilt-related periodicals. These materials were created by AQSG but do not constitute their official records.

 Series 2: Research and Reference Materials Box 3-47

The materials in this series are filed alphabetically according to the original order developed by AQSG. For example, information on the Mill Valley Quilt Authority, which preceded AQSG, is located under "M." There are numerous major categories in the files, including associations, catalogs, promotion materials on classes, documents relating to commemorative and community quilt projects, and programs, flyers, announcements and other items associated with national, state, and local quilt conferences, festivals, and exhibits in the United States. Additional topics include quilt patterns, quilting techniques, and tips and instructions for the creation of quilts. Topics are related to quilts developed by ethnic groups, information on individual quilters, files based on subjects or topics, catalogs and books documenting all aspects of quilt-making and associated activities such as embroidery, documenting quilts created in a United States region or in other countries, collections found in museums and other types of repositories, and associated topics. In the last box of the research materials are photographs, negatives, and slides.

 Series 3: Fabric Swatches Box 48-54

Included in this series are fabric swatches and samples. The majority of samples are arranged according to the company that created them. Additional items in this series include advertisements for fabric lines.
