Biography:

Long regarded as one of America's most gifted writers, Wright Morris authored over thirty-three books. He was born in Central City, Nebraska, on 6 January 1910. His novel, A Field of Vision, won the National Book Award in 1957, and Plains Song won the 1981 American Book Award for Fiction. In addition to his novels, he is the author of a number of photo-text books, books of criticism, and several collections of short stories. He taught English at San Francisco State College, and he and his wife, Josephine Mary Kantor Morris (1927-2002), made their home in Mill Valley, California. Morris died in April 1998.

Scope and Content:

The Morris collected materials include a holograph manuscript page from the novel Plains Song. The single page contains 24 lines in black ink. There are photocopies of correspondence between Morris and David Madden, many of the letters contain nicknames that the two correspondents created. There are cassette-recorded lectures and interviews of Morris recorded by Nebraska Educational Television during his semester at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln as a visiting lecturer. Some of the recorded materials were transcribed, and photocopies of the transcripts are included in the materials. Selected interviews with Morris were conducted by David Madden, Peter Bunnell, and Wayne Booth. Some cassettes contain recorded information about Morris. Additional items include: a bibliography that documents Morris' novels, photo-texts, and articles about Morris or written by him. Newspaper clippings and several promotional items about Morris are also a part of the collected materials.
