Background Note:
Founded in 1976, the Professional and Organizational Development (POD) Network in
Higher Education is a North American organization that fosters human development in
higher education through faculty, instructional, and organizational development. The
POD Network provides support and services for its members through publications,
conferences, consulting, and networking. It offers services and resources to
individuals interested in faculty development and takes on an advocacy role, seeking
to inform and persuade educational leaders of the value of faculty, instructional,
and organizational development in institutions of higher education. A board of
directors known as the Core Committee governs the activities of the POD Network.
Scope and Content:
The POD Network records include the mission statement of the organizations, its
history as outlined in oral history interviews, and information on the membership of
the network. Conference materials, materials relating to the activities of the
network and its publications are included. There is correspondence from committee
members and from affiliated organizations, such as the American Association of
Higher Education. There are records relating to POD Network grant programs, awards,
and workshops.

Series Description:
Series 1: History and Administration, Box 1- Box 4, Folder 2This series includes the mission statement of the POD Network, information
and publications on its history and development and documents relating to
its administration. The Core Committee materials include information on the
activities of the executive director and Core Committee meeting agendas and
minutes. The newsletter "Network News" includes memos from the executive
director, updates from the Core Committee, and information regarding
conferences and other POD Network activities.
Series 2: Conferences, Box 4, Folder 3-Box 6This series includes POD Network conference materials from 1976 through 2000.
The conference materials generally include registration forms, conference
schedules, lists of participants, and evaluation forms. Occasionally the
conference materials will include handouts from presentations or workshops
and ephemeral items relating to the conference location. Documents relating
to POD Network conference for the years 2001-2003 also are located on
compact discs.
Series 3: Activities and Publications, Box 7-Box 9This series includes materials that illustrate the work of the POD Network in
relation to teaching, instruction, and organizational development. The
materials include correspondence, brochures, programs, and publicity
materials for POD Network sponsored programs, such as training institutes
and workshops. Materials relating to POD Network publications include both
draft and final copies, correspondence, and submission guidelines,
particularly for To Improve the Academy; Resources for
Faculty, Instructional, and Organizational Development. A
microfiche copy of this publication is included with related materials.
There are original drawings and printed copies of drawings done by Bob
Diamond, several of these drawings appeared in "The Muse," a newsletter providing information for faculty and
teaching assistants. The Bright Idea Network materials document ideas
developed by conference participants as resources for POD Network members.
Documents relating to the Bright Ideas Network for 2004 are located on a
compact disc. The POD Network co-sponsored the publication of Assessing Our Work: Developing an Integrated,
Data-Driven Evaluation System, developed by Faculty and TA
Development, Ohio State University, published in compact disc format in
2004.
Series 4: Correspondence, Box 10-Box 12The correspondence to POD Network members, letters relating to the
administration of the Network, and promotional correspondence for new
members and for renewing members.
