Series Description:
Series 1: Willa Cather, Correspondence and General Materials, Box 1, Folders 1-20 The correspondence in this series includes numerous letters written by Cather's
publisher Alfred A. Knopf and by Cather regarding English publication of Willa Cather's
works by publishers William Heinemann and Cassell. Letters written to Knopf by F.P. Keppel relate to
an invitation from Keppel to attend the meeting of the League of Nations. The Cather
letter references the invitation but is written to a family member in Red Cloud. There
are also items such as promotional pamphlets, a 1948 clipping from the New Yorker, and a letter to Virginia Faulkner from Knopf.
The majority of letters relating to Houghton Mifflin are written by Ferris Greenslet
and include information on copyright statements and payments. Additional letters provide
information on alterations, typesetting, and illustrations for a published set of Cather's
books. There are also letters from members of her family and friends, such as
Isabelle McClung Hambourg. There are several folders of letters written by admirers of Cather's work,
often noted as "fan" letters. Many of these mention several novels, while others discuss only one,
the last letters are separated by publication title. Several poetry manuscripts and financial records are
included in the series.
Series 2: Cather Family, Box 1, Folders 21-32The items in this series are family letters written by Cather to her parents, Virginia and
Charles, sister Elsie Cather, and others. Cather occasionally used Elsie's
nickname "Bobbie". Additional items include a memorial program
from the funeral service of Cather's brother Douglass Cather and examples of Confederate
currency from 1861 and 1862.
Series 3: Isabelle McClung, Box 1, Folders 33-36This series includes letters written by Cather to Isabelle McClung Hambourg and Edith Hambourg,
including a letter reassuring Isabelle's family about her health and a letter from Cather that included
details about Isabelle's final days. One letter mentions the atmosphere for Jewish people in Italy
during the late 1930s. This series also includes various certificates and biographical items.
Series 4: Edith Lewis, Box 2, Folder 1-Box 3, Folder 10This series is made up of letters written to Edith Lewis from Stephen Tennant
from 1947 to 1964, including several undated letters. Tennant often added
ink sketches or watercolor drawings on his letters of which this series
has numerous examples. Additional letters to Lewis are from George Kates and other
acquaintances. Two Christmas cards illustrate artwork by artist Rudolph Ruzicka.
Other items include publicity materials for Cather's books and Lewis' last will and testament.
Series 5: Stephen Tennant, Box 3, Folders 11-18Tennant materials include correspondence and manuscripts of poems written by Tennant
along with his several journals and a sketchbook. Many of the letters include drawings and
watercolor sketches in both black and white and color.
Series 6: Photographs, Box 3, Folders 19-21Photographs in the collection include those of Willa Cather, several which were taken
on a visit to Virginia and include captions written in Cather's hand. Cather
acquaintances represented in the collection include Jan Hambourg, Stephen Tennant, and
Sarah Orne Jewett. One of the items is a framed watercolor on paper of a wreath of apple flowers
surrounding a cut-out reproduction of a photograph of Jewett. It is signed and dated in the lower
right corner, "WSC from LCH May 1, 1909". "LCH" are the initials of
American artist Laura Coombs Hills (1859-1952).
