Background Note:
In July 1977 the Lincoln Quilters Guild hosted "Quilt Symposium '77 "Fine Art - Folk
Art." The symposium was held on the Nebraska Wesleyan campus July 21-23, 1977 in
Lincoln, Nebraska. Over six hundred individuals attended the symposium, which
presented workshops and lectures by pivotal quilt artists and teachers such as Jean
Ray Laury, Michael James, Phyllis Hader, Marcia Sparks, and Helen Squire. Related
symposium events included exhibitions, a quilt block contest, and vendor sales.
Scope and Content:
The collection of quilt symposium records includes publicity information created by
members of the Lincoln Quilt Guild to promote the symposium. Selected items from the
symposium include a handbag given to participants with the signatures from several
of the artists and lecturers who taught or attended the event. Materials from Betty
Ferguson include the notes that she took at sessions and lectures that she
attended.
