Biography:
Joseph Elwood Carland was born March 24, 1919 in Broken Bow, Nebraska, and graduated
high school in 1938 with high honors and a scholarship to attend the University of
Nebraska–Lincoln Agriculture College. He married Ruth Delight Whitney on April
5, 1941. On August 25, 1944 Carland was inducted into the United States Army, and
arrived in England on March 7, 1945. Pvt. Joseph Elwood Carland, 26 years old, was
killed in action on April 5, 1945 in the vicinity of Marburg, Germany, while his
company was under attack. He was identified by his officers and his identification
tags.
Scope and Content:
The collection consists of correspondence and other materials sent to Ruth D. Carland
prior to and after the death of her husband. Correspondence forms the largest part
of the collection and is separated into letters from various offices of the War
Department and from the Veterans' Association. Correspondence also includes burial
information, benefits and claims information, and letters of condolence. Of interest
is the telegram received reporting Pvt. Carland's death, letters from the Secretary
of State regarding the purple heart Carland received posthumously, and a letter of
condolence from Carland's chaplain. Files also include Ruth and Joseph Carland's
marriage license. Books from the collection are cataloged separately.
