Biography:
Poet Carole Oles was born in New York City and attended Queens College and the
University of California, Berkeley. As of 2006, she had published eight books of
poems and her poems had appeared in numerous literary magazines, including the
Prairie Schooner. Oles has taught at the University of Massachusetts, Boston;
Hollins College; Old Dominion University; and California State University, Chico.
She has also been involved in writers' workshops and communities, particularly the
Bread Loaf Writers' Conference in Vermont.
Scope and Content:
Notes and research materials, drafts, manuscripts, and typescripts created by Carole
Oles comprise the bulk of her papers. Her curriculum vitae, three envelopes of photo
negatives, and one folder of correspondence are also included. The photographs may
be portraits of Oles. The single folder of correspondence relates to a literary
editing class Oles taught in 2004 at California State University, Chico.
For individual works, notes and research materials precede drafts, proofs,
illustrations, and reviews. Limited correspondence is included with related drafts
and research. Quotation marks denote her original folder titles, and italics are
used for titles of her works. For Waking Stone,
research folder titles frequently identify Oles' sources.
