Biography:

Pauline Sorensen was born in Wilber, Nebraska, on June 29, 1903 to Sylvia Chaloupka and Mike Sorensen. Pauline married Alfred Sorensen on October 26, 1926. They had two daughters, Phyllis Peara and Sydney (Gena) Mayer-Sorenson. The Sorensen family lived in Wilber, Nebraska. Alfred Sorensen died in Omaha in 1986. Pauline Sorensen died in 2004.

Pauline's maternal grandfather, Frank Sadilek, was born in 1859 in Czechoslovakia and immigrated to the United States at age 16. Frank Sadilek served in the Nebraska state senate. Pauline had two brothers, Howard and Hugo Chaloupka. Hugo Chaloupka was born in 1906, but died in 1914 after contracting rabies due to a dog bite.

Scope and Content:

The Pauline Sorensen papers are made up of personal correspondence, family genealogy, a personal diary, newspaper clippings of news articles and obituaries, Czechoslovak culture cookbooks, and a 1966 funeral guest book for Sylvia Sadilek Chaloupka, Pauline Sorensen's mother. Also included in the collection is Pauline Sorensen's family photographs, including a photograph scrapbook, and a family autograph book from 1897. The materials also include the 1914 publication, "My Remembrances by Frank J. Sadilek," Sorensen's maternal grandfather.

Series Description: Series 1: Family History, 1887-2002, undated

This series includes published and unpublished books and family genealogy files from both the Sadilek and Chaloupka families. Books included in this series are autograph books, funeral books, and My Reminiscences by Frank Sadilek. Genealogy files includes newspaper clippings, photographs, correspondence, and notes written to and by Pauline Sorensen.

Series 2: Series 2: Cookbooks, 1949-1992

This series consists of Pauline Sorensen's cookbooks, the majority are not professionally published and relate to Czechoslovak cooking and culture. Some cookbooks include notes.

Series 3: Series 3: Photographs, 1897-1942, undated

This series includes family potraits and group photos of the Sadilek and Chaloupka families. Some photographs include handwritten notes, as well as dates and names of persons in photograph. Photographs are black and white or color prints, including those in the photograph scrapbook. The oversize photos listed are all black and white prints. Some photos may be mounted albumen prints. Photographs have been housed separately due to their format.
