Background:
The Faculty Senate Commencement Committee is responsible for all commencement
arrangements. Over the years, the committee gathered input from students, faculty,
staff, and administrators about policies and traditions related to the University's
commencement activities and forwarded recommendations to the university chancellor
and the Commencement Committee.
Scope and Content:
The Commencement Committee records consist of materials generated by or collected by
the Committee in the course of its annual commencement preparations. The files cover
the years 1949-1976 and are arranged chronologically, with some multi-year folders
covering issues or preparations with which the Committee was involved for more than
one year. The collection includes minutes, reports, correspondence, commencement
instructions, seating plans, and selected commencement programs, and newspaper
clippings. Documented committee work includes the change of venue for annual
commencements from the University Coliseum to Pershing Auditorium, constitution of
the commencement Marshall Corps, the University's 1969 Centennial Commencement, and
efforts to personalize commencement exercises.
