Biography:
Reuben Gilbert Gustavson served as chancellor of the University of Nebraska from 1946 to 1953.
He recieved his M.A. from the University of Denver in 1917 and taught there as well, until 1937.
During that time, he recieved his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1925. He spent 1937 to
1942 at Denver as dean of the graduate school. From there, he served as vice president and dean
of faculties at the University of Chicago. In 1959, he took a position at the Univeristy of
Arizona, Tuscon.
During World War II, Gustavson worked on the Manhattan Project and the development of the
atomic bomb. Beginning in 1953 until 1959, he served as the first president and executive
director of Resources for the Future, Inc., an organization focused on natural resources and
conservation. Gustavson was born on April 6, 1892 to parents Hildegard and James. He died on
February 23, 1974.
