Biography:
William John Loeffel was born August 31, 1894 in St. Louis, Missouri. He graduated
with a B.S. in agriculture from the University of Missouri in 1917, and a M.S. in
zoology from the University of Nebraska (UN) in 1929. In 1917, he served as
scientific assistant for the United States Bureau of Animal Industry in Lincoln,
Nebraska, as supervisor of the 4-H Pig Club, focusing on animal husbandry extension
work. He joined the UN Department of Animal Husbandry faculty (now Animal Science)
in 1919, and served as chair of the department from 1940-1959.
Loeffel served as vice president (1935) and president (1936) of the American Society
of Animal Production and edited their journal, the Proceedings
from the Society, from 1932-1933. From 1934-1935, he supervised the
slaughter and processing of drought cattle during the Great Depression on behalf of
the Nebraska Emergency Relief Administration. In 1958, he became a UN Block and
Bridle Club honoree and was inducted into the Animal Sciences building Hall of Fame.
Loeffel served on many committees including the Journal of
Animal Science Editorial Board (1942-1944), Agricultural Board of the
National Research Council, Meat Review Committee of the National Cooperative Meat
Investigations (1935-1946), and the Feed Survey Committee of the American Feed
Manufacturers Association. He acted as general superintendent of the Ak-Sar-Ben
Livestock Show in Omaha, Nebraska, and was on the Board of Governors for the
American Royal Livestock Show in Kansas City, Missouri.
Loeffel died on May 5, 1962 and the University of Nebraska Loeffel Meat Laboratory
was dedicated to him in 1967.
Scope and Content:
The William J. Loeffel Animal Science Papers consist of correspondence, publications,
talks, University of Nebraska (UN) livestock histories, pedigrees, and feeding
experiment reports. Also included are Conference of Representatives of Institutions
Engaged in Cooperative Quality-in-Meat Investigations meeting reports, Conference on
Cooperative Meat Investigations Report of Review Committee, and other research
reports from Loeffel's position as chair of the Department of Animal Husbandry (now
Animal Science). Significant materials include the manuscript, The History of the Animal Husbandry Department University of Nebraska
published after Loeffel's death in 1963.

Series 1: Correspondence, 1928, 1945-1963This series consists of correspondence relating to William Loeffel's position
of chair of the Department Of Animal Husbandry. Significant correspondents
include Charles Adams, Sleeter Bull, H.B. Pier, Charles Fowler, and various
meat packing companies.
Series 2: Research and Data, 1910-1962This series contains research and data on UN livestock history and pedigrees,
feeding and carcass experiments, Livestock Marketing School programs, and
reports from the Conference of Representatives of Institutions Engaged in
Cooperative Quality-in-Meat Investigations and Conference on Cooperative
Meat Investigations Review Committee.
Series 3: Talks and Publications, 1930-1970This series contains talks and publications authored by William Loeffel on
livestock feeding experiments, meat production distribution, and histories
of the Department of Animal Husbandry (now Animal Science).
Series 4: Photographs, 1929-1955This series contains portraits of William Loeffel and livestock photographs
