Biography:
Professor of Animal Science, Richard B. Warren, was born on May 7, 1925 in Kansas. He
received his Bachelor's Degree in agriculture from Kansas State University in 1948
and participated in the Block & Bridle Club and rodeo, football, and basketball
teams. He received his Master's Degree in animal breeding from Oklahoma State
University in 1950 and served on the Michigan State University animal science
faculty from 1949-1956. He married Doris Kite in 1948.
Warren came to the University of Nebraska (UN) in 1956. He served as UN's extension
horse specialist and as head of the livestock judging teams from 1958-1985. He
became a nationally recognized judge of quarter horses, cutting horses, and
Appaloosa breeds. He may have inherited an interest in horses from his great-grand
father, who owned a world champion pacer horse.
Warren helped found the Nebraska District 4-H Horse Show Program and the 4-H Horse
Exposition in Fonner Park in Grand Island, Nebraska. He served as president of the
National Block & Bridle Club (1973-1975) and as advisor to the UN Block &
Bridle Club. He received many awards for his service including the Knights of
Ak-Sar-Ben Agricultural Achievement Award (1982), Nebraska Cooperative Extension
Service Excellent Award (1984), and Walnut Grove Livestock Industry Service Award
(1985), among others.
R.B. Warren died in Lincoln, Nebraska, in 2003. He is honored through the creation of
the R.W. Warren Annual 4-H Scholarship Fund in 1983 and the 2006 dedication of the
R.B. Warren arena located in the animal science complex.
