Biography:

Warren W. Caldwell was born on December 28, 1925 in Davenport, Iowa. He received an associate's degree from San Mateo Junior College in 1945. He then attended Stanford University where he completed his bachelor's degree in 1949 and his master's degree in 1950. He went on to the University of Washington where he completed his Ph.D. in anthropology in 1956. Prior to completing his doctorate, Caldwell served as Curator of the Seattle Museum of History and Industry and as Curator of Anthropology at Washington State Museum. Caldwell joined the Smithsonian Institution's River Basin Surveys in 1956. He became Chief of the Missouri River Basin Project in 1963 and was named Director of the River Basin Surveys in 1966. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln appointed Caldwell to the faculty on a part-time basis in 1960. Caldwell left the Smithsonian in 1969 to become Chairman of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Nebraska. Caldwell took part in many archeological excavations in the Northwest and Midwest. He contributed to various anthropological journals and served as an editor of the Plains Anthropologist. He was a Fellow of the American Anthropological Association as well as the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Caldwell was also a member of the Plains Conference, the Society for American Archeology, the Nebraska Academy of Sciences, and the Society of the Sigma Xi.

Scope and Content:

This collection consists of Warren Caldwell's professional papers. The majority of materials relate to Caldwell's articles and publications, including his notes, manuscripts, and typescipts. Additional items include Caldwell's survey material for the Missouri River Basin Project. There are memoranda, reports, and publications that were created through the project. The majority outline the work performed at specific sites, objects that were found, and provide recommendations for the future of the site based on evidence found or potential discoveries.

Series Description: Series 1: Missouri River Basin Project, Publications Box 1-Box 2

This series of materials includes published appraisals and surveys created as a part of the Missouri River Basin Survey, a project coordinated between the Smithsonian Institution and the National Park Service. The materials are most often titled "appraisal of archeological and paleontological resources" within the specific area identified in the states of Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming.

Series 2: Research and Publications Box 3-Box 7

This series includes selected publications that Caldwell authored or co-authored, including manuscript, typescript, and published copies of the articles. There are often handwritten notes relating to the publications. Field surveys, reports, and notes associated with Caldwell's work on the Missouri River Basin Project are included in these materials. Additional items include those materials relating to the University of Nebraska or supporting Caldwell's interests in a specific research area.
