Biography:
Thomas Jefferson Fitzpatrick was born at Centerville, Iowa, on 2 April 1868. He
attended the State University of Iowa, where he received a Bachelor of Science in
1893 and a Master of Science in 1895. He served as Professor of Mathematics and
Botany at Graceland College from 1895 to 1899 and again from 1908 to 1912. He also
worked as a field collector for the Iowa State Historical Society from 1903 to
1907.
Fitzpatrick came to Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1913 to serve as Professor of Science at
Cotner College. He became Assistant Professor of Botany and Curator of the Herbarium
at the University of Nebraska in 1918, a position he held until his retirement in
1949. During his career at the University of Nebraska he also served as librarian
for the Botany and Mathematics Departments. He married Mary Frances Linder
Fitzpatrick and they had one son, Fred. Fitzpatrick died in Lincoln on 28 March
1952.
Scope and Content:
The Fitzpatrick papers include correspondence written by T.J. and his wife, Mary
Linder Fitzpatrick, in addition to letters received from family, friends, and
individuals that relate to Fitzpatrick's work. Also included are photographs,
publications by Fitzpatrick, correspondence, articles, and newspaper clippings
regarding the disposition of his personal library, obituaries, and selected
hand-copied letters relating to the early history of the University. Photographs
include one portrait and two candid shots of Fitzpatrick, including details. There
are two photos of a tornado in Elmwood, Nebraska, on April 6, 1919, taken by G.B.
Pickwell. The remaining few photos are unidentified.
