Biography:
Born in Byron, Illinois on 2 February 1883, Fred Wilbert Upson attended the
University of Nebraska. He received his B.Sc. in 1907 and his A.M. in 1908. He went
on to the University of Chicago and received his Ph.D. in 1910. Upson worked as an
instructor in chemistry at the University of Cincinnati from 1910 to 1912, when he
returned to the University of Chicago as an instructor. Upson began his career at
the University of Nebraska in 1913 as a professor of agricultural chemistry and
became head of the department. In 1916 the University appointed Upson as a professor
of chemistry. He became head of the Chemistry Department in 1919. He also served as
Dean of the Graduate School from 1929 to 1938. Due to illness, he retired in 1938.
He actively participated in a number of professional organizations including the
American Chemical Society and the American Association of University Professors and
published several papers on the chemistry of carbohydrates and the mechanism of
organic reactions. Upson died on 10 February 1942 at the age of 59.
Scope and Content:
The papers consist of correspondence to and from Upson regarding departmental
business as well as requests for soil sample analysis and other research advice.
Additional materials include articles, reprints, and a bibliography of Upson's
publications.
