Biography:
Bernice Slote, granddaughter of Nebraska homesteaders, was born November 17, 1913, in
Hickman, Nebraska. Valedictorian of her high school class, she graduated from Nebraska
Wesleyan University with high distinction in 1933. She taught English at Ord High School
from 1934 until 1941 and also played the piano for church and Sunday school, taught girls'
gymnastics and trained the cheering squads.
In 1941 Slote earned her masters degree in English at the University of Nebraska, working
primarily with Professor L.C. Wimberley; she continued graduate work at the University of
Michigan where she earned two Hopwood Awards for writing poetry. Despite encouragement from
her professors, she decided not to earn her Ph.D.; instead she taught English at the
Nebraska City High School from 1941-1942. From 1942-1946 she was Instructor of English,
Director of the Library, and the Assistant to the Dean at Norfolk Junior College.
In 1946 she was invited to join the faculty of the English Department at the University of
Nebraska, where she taught literature and writing. Her poems had begun to appear in leading
journals around the country: The Atlantic Monthly, Michigan Quarterly Review, Voices,
Poetry Chap-Book, etc. In 1963 she became editor of the The Prairie Schooner, a responsibility she retained until her
retirement in 1980. She died in Lincoln on February 22, 1983.
Slote was well known as editor, poet, teacher, scholar, and critic. Her first book Keats and the Dramatic Principle (1958) won the Explicator Award
for the best book of literary analysis in English or American Literature. Her second book
Start with the Sun (1960) with James E. Miller, Jr. and Karl
Shapiro, won the Chap-Book Award from the Poetry Society of America for an outstanding work
in the field of poetry criticism. Her three text-book anthologies, The
Dimensions of Poetry (1962), The Dimensions of Short
Story (1964), and The Dimensions of Literature,
(1967), with James E. Miller, Jr. were widely used and well received. She edited Myth and Symbol: Critical Approaches and Applications (1963), and
Literature and Society: Nineteen Essays (1964), and wrote
numerous articles on literary subjects.
She is best known for her work on Willa Cather. Her edition of Cather's first book April Twilights (1903) in 1967 and her collection of Cather's early
writings, The Kingdom of Art (1967) mark the beginning of
modern Willa Cather studies. Editions of other early works by Cather followed: Uncle Valentine and Other Stories (1973), and Alexander's Bridge (1977).
Editor of several collections of scholarly essays by various hands, she published studies
on Cather's works and delivered lectures around the country on various topics. Awarded
honorary doctorates from Nebraska Wesleyan University and Midland College, she received a
distinguished teaching award in 1978 and the first Award for Outstanding Research and
Creativity in 1979 from the University of Nebraska. She reluctantly refused a Senior
Fellowship at Radcliff College in 1977, but accepted the prestigious National Endowment for
the Humanities Senior Research Fellowship in 1978. Among other awards she received were the
National Foundation on the Arts Editor's Award in 1970 and Nebraska Library Association's
Mari Sandoz Award in 1974.
In addition to writing, editing, lecturing, teaching, advising graduate students, and
supervising doctoral candidates, Slote also moderated a KUON-TV discussion panel
(Conversation Piece). She was also active on the Board of Governors of the Willa Cather
Memorial in Red Cloud, the Nebraska State Poet Laureate Commission, and the Western
Literature Association. At the University of Nebraska Press, she served as an advisory
editor.
Scope and Content:
The Bernice Slote papers contains her Willa Cather research materials and her personal
papers. Research materials on Willa Cather are a large part of Slote's papers and contain
the following: correspondence, early writings, newspaper clippings, periodical articles,
short stories and poems as well as reviews and criticism of Cather and her works. This
collection contains few original Cather letters. Some of the letters are not actual letters,
rather paraphrases done presumably by Slote during her research. Others are photocopies of
originals, the more substantial of those are followed by brief descriptive statements. The
collection includes Slote's correspondence, manuscripts, her research files, materials on
her professional activities, slides, microfilms and cassette tapes.

Series Description:
Series 1: Cather Family Materials, Box 1, Folders 1-15This series consists of Slote's research on the Cather family history and genealogy and
correspondence of the Cather family collected by Slote. The majority of materials are
photocopies. The genealogy details information on the family history going back to early
family members and includes ship lists, property purchases, coat of arms, and
information on the Seibert family. Cather family represented in the correspondence
include William Cather, Emily Ann Caroline Smith Cather, Virginia (Jennie) Cather Ayre,
Frances (Franc) Amanda Smith Cather, George P. Cather, Charles Cather, Alverna (Vernie)
Cather Clutter. There are a few original letters from William Cather, additional letters
are photocopies of letters that Slote received from family members or that she gathered
from other repositories that contain Cather materials.
Series 2: Willa Cather Materials, Box 1, Folder 16-Box 4, Folder 13This series includes materials, either originals or copies, of correspondence,
articles, short stories, and other small publications written by Cather. It includes
selected copies of items relating to Cather's life, such as her birth certificate, her
high school diploma, and her will. The correspondence in the series includes only
photocopies of letters written by Willa Cather or written by her family, friends,
colleagues, and business associations. A detailed list of correspondents represented in
this series of the collection is available. Slote obtained the photocopies from various
archival repositories that own the original letters. The Archives & Special
Collections does not allow any of these materials to be photocopied.
Publications within this series include published works by Cather; the majority are
photocopies with a few selected reprints. These items do not include copies of any of
Cather's novels. Included are items that Cather wrote and that appeared in such
publications as Harper's Weekly, McClure's Magazine, The Home Monthly, and The Pittsburgh Leader. These items have been arranged
alphabetically according to the title of the publication regardless of the date they
were written. Additional smaller publications include the Women's
Home Companion, Collier, the Denver Post, Scribner's, and The Nation. The Cather written materials also include articles
Cather produced as a reporter and feature writer for the Nebraska
Chautauqua in Crete, Nebraska, 1884. Slote also received a fragment of Cather's
last, unpublished novel set in Avignon, titled "Hard
Punishments." This fragment is accompanied by correspondence and an article
written by George N. Kates.
Series 3: Slote's Articles and Publications on Cather, Box 4, Folder 14-Box 6, Folder 2This series includes published and non-published copies of articles, papers, reviews,
and criticism that Slote wrote on Cather or about other individuals who wrote on
Cather.
Series 4: Research, Articles and Publications on Cather, Box 6, Folder 3-Box 10, Folder 14This series includes materials written by other people that Slote collected for her
research. Reviews of Cather's work are those gathered by Slote during her research on
Cather and are arranged alphabetically according to the title of the original Cather
work. The reviews are also arranged by date, with those written at the time of
publication of a novel separated from later reviews and critisisms. This series includes
scholarly articles on Cather, articles on her life and its influence on her work,
student papers, and other published materials.
Series 5: Research on Cather and Catheriana, Box 10, Folder 15-Box 16, Folder 7Slote's research on Cather's writing, life, career, and family are within this series.
The majority of the bibliographic materials are entries of Cather's works that appear in
other libraries. There are photocopies of the original card catalog entries from the
National Union Catalog and articles on Cather materials that appear in the New York
Public Library bulletin.
Slote also collected biographies written about Cather, papers and criticisms on Cather,
items that are derivatives of or influenced by Cather's work, and information about her
life in Nebraska, including materials relating to Red Cloud, Nebraska and the Willa
Cather Pioneer Memorial.
Series 6: Cather Reprints, University of Nebraska Press, Box 16, Folder 8-Box 18, Folder 10This series includes materials on editions of Cather's published works reprinted by the
University of Nebraska Press.
Series 7: Slote Correspondence, Box 18, Folder 11-Box 20, Folder 6This series contains Slote's personal and business correspondence. Some of the letters
are from Cather family members, such as Helen Cather Southwick, who wrote directly to
Slote concerning Cather and her research on Cather. Other correspondence is between
Slote, her friends, acquaintances, and colleagues.
Series 8: Slote Manuscripts and Poetry, Box 20, Folder 7-Box 24, Folder 5This series contains manuscripts, poetry, and papers that Slote wrote and published on
a variety of subjects. Within this series are legal documents relating to Slote's
published works. The papers and poetry written by Slote have been arranged
alphabetically by title. Some of the manuscript materials also include Slote's drafts
and notes. Slote wrote Keats and the Dramatic Principle,
which was published in 1958. Included are drafts of the manuscript, typescript with
corrections, and galley proofs of the publication. Within this section is Realism in Keats: A Study of Four Odes and their Relationship to the
Earlier Poems, written by Vernon L. Plambeck, a graduate student, who wrote the
dissertation in 1973, under Slote's supervision.
Series 9: Professional Activities, Box 24, Folder 6-Box 26, Folder 1Slote's professional activities are documented in this series, including her
involvement in the creation of Great Plains studies at the University of Nebraska. There
is some correspondence and other materials relating to her work as an editor of The Prairie Schooner. Additional items include those materials
Slote collected during her attendance at various professional conferences.
Series 10: Research Materials and Files, Box 26, Folder 2-Box 35, Folder 8This series contains includes research materials that Slote gathered on specific
individuals such as Edith Lewis, Stephen Crane, Edgar Allan Poe, Alvin Johnson, Nebraska
authors Wright Morris and John G. Neihardt, and colleague Louise Pound. These files
include correspondence written to Slote and some biographical materials. The research
files on individuals have been arranged alphabetically by last name; the files include
newspaper clippings, biographies, and bibliographies. This series contains materials
that Slote collected on the history of Nebraska, the history of the university, and
include samples of student publications.
