Biography:

Hilda Raz's influential literary career encompasses work as a poet and essayist, editor of the literary magazine Prairie Schooner, and English professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL). Hilda Raz started working at the Prairie Schooner in 1969 as an editorial assistant. She moved into the role of contributing editor in 1972 and then as poetry editor beginning in 1976. After working as the publication's acting editor, 1980-1981 and 1985, Raz went on to become the editor- in-chief from 1987 to 2010.

A professor in English at UNL from 1990-2010, Raz was named the first Luschei Professor and Editor in the Department of English in 1993. In addition to teaching at UNL, Raz has participated in numerous writing conferences, panels, and workshops throughout the nation. She received the Stanley W. Lindberg Award for Excellence in Literary Editing in 2010.

Scope and Content:

Hilda Raz's professional life as a writer, editor, and educator are represented in the collection materials. Correspondence and manuscripts comprise about half of the collection. The remainder relates primarily to Raz's work as an educator, including her work as a professor at UNL and as a lecturer at conferences and workshops. Throughout the collection, quotation marks indicate original folder titles, and italics are used for titles of works.

Series Description: Series 1: Correspondence, Box 1-12

Arranged alphabetically by correspondent, the series contains mostly incoming correspondence but includes some outgoing correspondence as well as written works by and about correspondents. Topics include writers, writing, poetry, essays, and personal life. Raz kept files organized by name, with multiple files for some individuals. A few folders contain general correspondence--for example, those labeled "agents" and "from the famous." Later correspondence, mostly email, is arranged chronologically in original order at the end of the series. Most of the general correspondence relates to Raz's work such as reviews, articles, and appearances.

 Series 2: Writing and Editing, Box 13-36

Series 2 consists primarily of works written or edited by Raz and associated correspondence. A few items collected by Raz are included at the series' end. Specific book-length works are arranged chronologically, followed by poems, essays, and editing work. Correspondence within writing project files often contains sections of drafts, research, publicity materials, and contracts. Folders for contributors to Living on the Margins are arranged alphabetically and contain correspondence as well as contributors' works. Poem folders with general titles, enclosed in quotations, indicate the original filing Raz used. General poetry files include drafts and reworkings of poems, which provide information about Raz's writing process and the evolution of a work. Collected clippings are mostly about Raz and her work, but also include clippings about family, other writers, and topics of interest. "Finished work, delivered or published" in box 32 includes correspondence, copies of works, and a few reviews.

Series 3: Conferences, workshops, and readings, Box 37-Box 45

Series 3 relates to Raz's participation in workshops, speaking engagements, conferences, panels, and advisory boards. Folders are arranged alphabetically by engagement name and include correspondence, brochures, participant lists, presentation transcripts, and participant works. Correspondence in this series relates to logistics such as payment, workshop topics, and participants, but also includes correspondence to and from people met in association with workshops. Of particular interest are extensive materials from the Bread Loaf Writers Conference.

Series 4: Teaching, Box 45-68

The teaching series consists of materials from classes taught by Raz, compiled career documentation, and student files. Folders for specific classes contain syllabi, assignment descriptions, handouts, class newsletters, and teaching evaluations. Insights into teaching techniques, influential writers and works, and interplay between teacher and student can be gleaned from these folders. Poetry and women's studies are the primary topics of Raz's classes. Career documentation includes correspondence and collected materials documenting Raz's achievements as an educator, writer, and editor. These are arranged chronologically and may be identified by file names such as: personnel files, cumulative faculty files or records, promotion files, good things, merit files, and ORCA nomination.

Student files contain correspondence and manuscripts illustrating Raz's work with graduate students, particularly poets and writers of creative nonfiction. Found at the series' end, student files are arranged alphabetically.

 Series 5: Calendars, Box 68-69

Calendars record Hilda Raz's professional and personal appointments spanning the years 1969-2001. Calendars from the mid-1970s to mid-1990s are not part of the collection.

 Series 6: Photographs Box 70

Photographs of Hilda Raz, friends, and colleagues include images from the Prairie Schooner's 75th anniversary celebration and the reception where Raz received UNL's ORCA award. They date from the 1970s-2010.

 Series 7: Audio-visual materials, Box 71-73

Audio cassettes in the collection are mostly recordings of Raz's readings and interviews, and VHS recordings include videos of Raz as well. A recording of birthday poems presented to Raz in 1995 and a reading from the Prairie Schooner's 75th anniversary celebration are two notable items in the series.

 Series 8: Artifacts

Collection artifacts consist of a trophy and an autographed T-shirt from the Prairie Schooner's 75th anniversary celebration and illustrated, framed editions of Hilda Raz's poems "He/She the Bike" and "Diction".
