Biography:

Oets K. Bouwsma was born on 22 November 1898 in Muskegon, Michigan. He received his B.A. degree from the University of Michigan in 1920. The following year he received his Master's and in 1928 his Ph.D., both from the University of Michigan. He taught at the University of Michigan as an English instructor from 1922-1928. He began his teaching career at the University of Nebraska as an assistant professor of Philosophy in 1928 and became a full professor in 1948. In 1965, Bouwsma left the University to teach Philosophy at the University of Texas-Austin. During his career he was a visiting professor at Cornell University, Smith College, and Columbia University. He and his wife Gertrude had two sons, William and Charles, and a daughter, Gretchen. Bouwsma died in 1978 in Austin, Texas.

Scope and Content:

The Bouwsma Papers contain correspondence some of which are photocopies, speeches, class lecture notes, and biographical materials. There are also student recollections gathered together in 1991.
