Background:

Clara Conklin began as an University of Nebraska instructor in Romance Languages in September 1892. Her appointment followed the receipt of her masters from DePauw. She remained at the university until her retirement in 1938. Conklin served as the chair of the Modern Languages Department, with an office in University Hall when Modern Language classes were located there. Conklin died on December 27, 1944

Scope and Content:

These papers relate to Clara Conklin's travels, career, and personal life. Only the early correspondence and one article relate to her academic career at the University of Nebraska. The correspondence from James H. Canfield relates to Conklin's appointment as an instructor in German and French languages. Most of the collection relates to European travel between 1896-1902. Passenger lists include those from the following cruise lines: American Line, 1906; Holland-America Line 1898; Red Star Line, 1886 and 1888; Compagnie Generale Transatlantique, 1895. The souvenir books are those published in booklet form for tourists and may include actual black and white prints, printed copies of photographs, or postcards. Some postcards are hand-colored. The majority of the booklets, postcards, and photographs provide information on the publisher and their location. The newspaper clippings include a tribute to Clara Conklin written by J.E. Lawrence.
