Background:
The Awgwan, started publication in 1913 as a humour magazine for
the University of Nebraska campus. The publication included articles and cartoons, poetry, short
quips, and quotations on students, football, homecoming, professors, classes, alumni, and
society. Each issue included an editorial. The Awgwan, was
published first by a small group of students, who later called themselves the Helmet and Quill
Society. With the publication of Volume 5, Sigma Delta Chi, the local chapter of a professional
journalism fraternity took over responsiblity for the publication. The final volume appeared in
1946.
Scope and Content:
The Awgwan, included articles, cartoons, editorials, poetry, and
related types of creative works documenting student activities on campus through humor. The
publications were supported by local advertising, so the periodicals include a wide variety of
ads documenting local businesses that catered to the student population, such as clothing,
restaurants, boarding houses, laundry services, and photographers. Some of the numbers are
missing covers, though the publication information is included after several pages of
advertisements. In addition, some of the volume numbers that appear on the volume covers do not
match the dates listed in the publication notice in the volume itself. For example, vol. 8, no.
4 is dated December 1919 on the cover, vol. 8, no. 5, is dated December 1920 on the cover, and
on the inside of both of these numbers the publication date is listed as no. 3, November
1919.
