History:
Ruth Etting was one of the most popular singing stars of the late 1920s and early
1930s. On radio she established herself as America's pre-eminent popular singer,
repeatedly voted as the top female singer on the air in national listener polls.
While the radio and the recording industry were still in their early developing
years, Ruth Etting recorded over 200 songs by such composers as Irving Berlin,
Johnny Green, Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart. She was a regular performer on at
least eight network radio programs, was featured in six Broadway shows, was
highlighted in three major full-length movies, and starred in 35 movie short
subjects between 1928 and 1936.
Etting was born in David City, Nebraska on November 23, 1897. After graduation from
high school in 1916, she moved to Chicago to attend the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts
as a costume designer. From there she joined a chorus line and performed at the
Marigold Gardens. In time, she was given solo opportunities which developed into her
being billed as "Chicago's Sweetheart" and as a headliner in the Marigold Gardens,
the Rainbo Gardens and the Terrace room of the Hotel Morrison in Chicago. She
married Moe Snyder. She became a radio star, and her first recording was released by
Columbia in 1926.
Etting moved to New York City in 1927 and became a Ziegfeld girl in the Follies. She
made some movie shorts there, then moved to Hollywood in the early 1930s, where she
took part in three full-length movies.
In 1937 Snyder and Etting divorced and Snyder moved east. Snyder returned to
California in 1938 and in a jealous rage shot and wounded Ruth's pianist and
boyfriend Myrl Alderman. The subsequent sensationalized trial brought Etting's
career to a halt. Snyder was tried for kidnapping and attempted murder. The trial
was a scandal, lasting from October through December of 1938, after which Snyder was
found guilty and sentenced to prison. When he appealed the decision, Ruth and Myrl
Alderman, who had by that time married, declined to appear in court, and he was
released after a year in prison.
Ruth Etting returned to the limelight in 1955 when Doris Day and Jimmy Cagney played
Ruth and Moe in the movie, Love Me or Leave Me, also the title of the song that
seemed to epitomize Ruth's life. After the movie's release, Ruth turned down an
offer of a five-figure salary to come out of retirement. Etting retired in Colorado
Springs with Myrl Alderman, and lived there until her death in 1978.

Series Description:
Series 1: Photographs The 357 photographs include 43 family photographs of Ruth Etting as a child
with her parents Alfred Etting and Winifred K. Etting, along with her aunt,
Rose Etting, and her grandparents. The bulk of the collection consists of
publicity photographs of Ruth from her Chicago period, through New York, and
to Hollywood. Included are stills from movie shorts and full-length movies,
some pictures of other stars and Ruth with other stars, and some commercial
pictures. Each photograph is numbered. The photographs have been described
online with a date or possible date range given. The photographs have been
digitized online in the Ruth Etting Collection Image Gallery. The majority of the
photographs were a gift to John Moran from John Alderman, Ruth Etting's
stepson.
Series 2: Sheet Music The sheet music was collected by John Moran and consists of 225 pieces. Ruth
Etting's photograph appears on the covers of most of the publications.
Series 3: Recordings and Audio Visual Materials This series consists of 127 sound recordings (cassette, reel-to-reel, 33
1/3rd, 78, and 45), 12 videotapes, and 3 films. The sound recordings are
commercially made or privately reproduced from commercial recordings of Ruth
singing. The videotapes are a combination of commercial publications and
private recordings and consist of Ruth Etting's short films, her Hollywood
movies, and other people's programs that related to Ruth Etting. The LP
recordings have been cataloged and can be found individually under the added
title "Ruth Etting Collection" in the UNL Libraries catalog.
Series 4: Collected Papers, Scrapbooks, and Memorabilia The papers include correspondence, articles, and other documents associated
with the life and career of Ruth Etting. Some of these are copies of
materials created during Ruth Etting's lifetime, including legal documents.
Others were collected by John Moran, who created the Etting collection,
mostly between 1981 and 1984. The correspondence includes letters between
John Moran and Ruth Etting's stepson John Alderman and between members of
the David City Class of 1916, among others. Additional collected materials
are those produced about Etting by others, such as faculty and staff of the
Music Library and faculty from the School of Music. Highlights are three
scrapbooks created by John Moran and an over-sized scrapbook created for
Ruth Etting.
