History:

Mary Ellen Sheldon, born in Nehawka, Nebraska, was one of three daughters of George Lawson Sheldon and Rose Higgins Sheldon. George Sheldon graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1892 and later served as governor of Nebraska. Rose Higgins Sheldon graduated with the class of 1894. Sheldon's grandfather, Lawson Sheldon, was involved in territorial politics. After leaving Nebraska, the Sheldon family lived in Wayside, Mississippi, and Sheldon returned to Nebraska for college. She graduated from the University of Nebraska with a bachelor of science in 1922. Sheldon participated in many campus activities, such as becoming a charter member of the University Press Club, running for president of her freshman class, serving in the YWCA, and serving on the staff of the Cornhusker annual. Sheldon's senior class picture can be seen in the 1922 Cornhusker.

Scope and Content:

The correspondence includes letters written to Sheldon by her mother, Rose H. Sheldon and her sisters Judy and Julia Sheldon, and several friends. Many of the letters discuss Judy Sheldon's activities in Wayside, Mississippi, along with Sheldon's life as a student at the University of Nebraska, particularly through letters written to her. Many of the newspaper clippings document Sheldon's campus activities and several relate to a Student Volunteer Convention held in Des Moines, Iowa, from Dec. 31, 1919-Jan. 4, 1920.
